Bloom Of The Pontotoc

Texas Wildfowers from Lady Bird Johnson stand among the remnants of Pontotoc a West Texas ghost town. Pontotoc survived a Typhoid outbreak that killed so many that this small town had the dubious distinction of having two cemeteries.

The building in the the photo is the Pontotoc Academy which was a school that taught young teachers. The Academy had a class of over 200 students before it was shuttered in 1889 because of the Typoid epidemic.

In 1947 a fire started in the movie theatre and essentially burned the entire town to the ground leaving only burned out hulls of the thriving town it once had been.
